Ever since Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced the Greater Southern Waterfront Transformation that will be a key redevelopment focus area in Singapore, many locals and foreigners have taken interest in the region for property investment. However where is the Greater Southern Waterfront, and what kind of transformation is expected to take place?The Greater Southern Waterfront, or GSW in short, in a long stretch of land extending from Pasir Panjang to Marina East. It is planned to be a new major location for urban living along Singapore’s southern coast, and a gateway for new commercial opportunities.

Development of the Greater Southern Waterfront is scheduled in phases, with the Keppel Club, former Pasir Panjang Power District and Mount Faber in phase one, and with a timeline of five to ten years.The Pasir Panjang Power DistrictThe two previous power station structures and the neighbouring industrial buildings that are no longer in operation form the core of the Pasir Panjang Power District. Built in the 1950s and 60s, the rich heritage and strategic waterfront setting makes this an ideal location for transformation into an attraction for everyone to enjoy. “Power-Up Pasir Panjang”, a programme encouraging public participation for concepts into the future possibilities of this special site, and to celebrate its distinctive heritage, was held from 30th April 2019 – 25th June 2019. Unique ideas and proposals will be studied and implemented into design principles for the subsequent use of the power district.

One of the unique ideas for a change of use is the former St James Power Station, which was a Nightlife complex that ceased operations in 2018. It was recently taken over by Dyson as their global headquarters, as the center of their research and development projects, which is expected to run in full force in 2021.

Together with about 9000 homes planned at the Keppel Club next to the Pasir Panjang Power District, it will be interesting to see what plans the government have for Pasir Panjang Power District to compliment this Office and Residential area.
